Local Fishing Report
for the
Bighorn Mountains

Fishing Report for Month of June 2009

Big Horn Mountain Area Streams:
Including Clear Creek, Rock Creek, Piney Creek, Goose Creek, Tongue River,
Powder River, Tensleep Creek, Paintrock Creek, and Shell Creek

Sections below 9000' are open and mostly ice free.  Run-off has started, all streams are high and off-color and fishing is tough.

Fly fishermen may have some luck with dark colored,  large, stonefly nymphs or with wooly buggers, but fly fishing will be tough until the water goes down.

Spin Fishermen may have luck with worms or  gold or copper colored spinners fished in the deeper holes.

Mountain Lakes:
Including Meadowlark Lake, Tie-Hack Reservoir, East & West Tensleep Lakes,
and all Cloud Peak Wilderness Lakes.

Most mountain lakes are still frozen, but some of the lower elevation lakes and reservoirs are starting to open up.  Tie-Hack Reservoir, Meadowlark Lake, and Sibley Lake are open.  More lower elevation lakes should be opening up soon.

Tie-Hack Reservoir is open and people are starting to fish.  The water is still very cold and action is slow, but a few fish are being caught.

Fly Fishermen should try small nymphs like Pheasant Tails and Hare's Ears

Spin Fishermen could try small spinners or worms.

Prairie Lakes:
Including Lake DeSmet, Healy Reservoir, and Muddy Guard Reservoirs.

A lot of folks have been fishing Muddy Guard Reservoirs, but the action has been slow.

Fly Fishermen may have luck with Pheasant Tails, Damsel Nymphs, or Chironomid patterns.  Spin fishermen may have luck with Jake's Lures or Kastmasters.

Anglers are reporting some luck at Healy Reservoir, good catches of Yellow Perch and a few smaller Splake are being caught.

Fly fishermen could try beadhead nymphs or small streamers and wooly buggers.

Spin Fishermen may have luck with Jakes Lures, or spinners or Jigs with twister tails.

Lake DeSmet

Boat fishermen are reporting some luck, trolling with Rapalas, Krocodile spoons, and Cowbells and a worm.
